It shaped my approach initially when I went into my own consulting business and now helping me with leading the The Blue Chip Cookie Company to a new level. I recommend it for anyone that is thinking about going into their own business or if you are in your own business right now, doesn't matter. I just "revisited" the book again, several months ago, when I was cleaning my home office! I was amazed how even when you think you are doing things, it takes a reminder of a book like this. Interesting enough, there is a book that I read in 2003, just one year after I left P&G called the E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. It takes a unique person that can handle the stress of taking risk and also being able to wear many hats (Sales, Marketing, Production, Human Resources, Research & Development, Customer Service), while at the same time moving a "vision" forward. I shared with this group of students, the big difference is that you have to wear many hats, and many times people start their own business, leave a secure job, so they can do what they love, but soon they realize there is more to owning your own business then just doing "the thing that you love." I went on to explain that owning your own business is harder than working for a company because it takes something called "RISK." Taking risk is very stressful, but also has great rewards. I spoke recently to a group of young people at a local high school and they asked, "why did you decide to become an entrepreneur?" I explained to them that I didn't wake up when 18 years old and say, I want to own my own business one day, it just happened over time! Small business is the foundation of our economy and unless you have run your own business it is hard to explain! You risk, you work harder than you ever thought you would, and you are exhausted at the end of the day, but it is your business and you do it because you believe you can make a difference to the community, to your family and share your gifts to the world. I think a lot of people don't really understand how stressful owning your own business is and what it truly entails. With April being "Stress Awareness Month" I thought I would share a quick "shout out" to my fellow entrepreneurs or to those that are thinking about going into your own business, buying a business. I did research on the the words "desserts" and "stressed" and the only connection I can find between the words is that when you are stressed, you try to relax, hence eat desserts to be happy, preferably a Blue Chip Cookie! Did you know that April is "Stress Awareness Month!" Did you ever notice that STRESSED spelled backwards is the word DESSERTS! In 2006, after purchasing Blue Chip Cookies I saw a sign that said this and I laughed so hard, because buying a business was clearly one of my most stressful times, ironically I was buying into the "desserts" business. ![]()
